As a young mother, I had a terrifying experience one night as I held my newborn son. He was a very difficult pregnancy and even worse delivery, where I very nearly came close to dying. As I held him that night, I realized that if something had happened to me, he being too young to remember, the love and sacrifice I had offered him would be forgotten. I would be forgotten. That terrifying thought confirmed within me a desire to leave a legacy, a way for him to know and understand who his mother is, and the things I value. I wanted to make an impact on his life, even if I wasn’t around to personally do it.
An Ethical Will was my answer. Ethical Wills are a means to pass on the values you’ve lived by and the lessons you’ve learned. Because they don’t document every life event, they are shorter and easier to do than a full Life Legacy. They get to the heart of your story and explain who is at the core. Ethical Wills are perfect for those who haven’t lived a lifetime yet, those whose lifetime is getting shorter, or those who need a great place to start for the rest of their story.

What is an Ethical Will?
- Ethical Wills are a short concise summary of values and lessons, and a way to share life experiences. They are the heart of a life story and so are rich in emotional content. Ethical Wills are intended to be shared with those very close in relationship to you, as they are filled with personal information and insight.
- Ethical Wills are NOT legal documents, so you don’t need a lawyer to do one.
- History: They are an ancient tradition (found in many forms of scripture) with a modern twist. Used anciently by patriarchs, fathers, or kings to pass down wisdom. Now they are used by anyone to share life experiences and values.
Why should I write an Ethical Will?
- If you want to influence those closest to you
- If you want to want to explain your life decisions
- If you want to be remembered when you die
- If you want to save time and energy when writing your life story
- If you want to help others make better decisions
- If you want to pass on your wisdom
